Peter Moorby Reed's grandfather, John Moorby, first started weaving fine cotton sheeting fabrics near the Lancashire town of Nelson in 1861. By the early 1920's Nelson became renowned as the world's weaving centre for wide width cotton sheeting cloths. Today, Peter Reed Group Limited is one of only a handful of mills which are left operating in the Nelson area, and is the only weaving shed whose looms are entirely devoted to the manufacturing of bedlinens.
Peter Reed weave three grades of cotton sheeting, all of which are constructed from 100% long staple Egyptian cotton yarns which are either carded or combed. These qualities are 283 (EGYPTIAN), 1405 (PERCALE) & 1600 (SUPERCALE) and their thread counts are 180, 240 and 300 respectively after washing. Qualities 1800 and 1408 are union cloths produced with pure linen and condenser cotton weft yarns; these constructions result in our LINEN UNION (1800) and Egyptian cotton FLANNELETTE (1408) fabrics. Quality 1900 is woven from pure flax warp and weft yarns to give an excellent 100% LINEN sheeting cloth. Qualities 1950, 1960, 1968 and 1969 are dobby woven twill fabrics which have been developed for the blanket and duvet cover market; their design names are PIQUE (1950) ACCRINGTON (1960) MORGAN (1968) and TAGUS (1969).
